A day in the life of ONE autism Mum
I say 'ONE' autism Mum because every single autism Mum has different struggles on a daily basis. Different routines, different therapies etc.
So I wanted to give you a little insight to things that happen on a Thursday for us. Thursday is James' therapy day ( well every day is therapy day but this is with his therapists)....
2am James awake- ready to PARTY ( thanks Theo for sitting up with him so Mumma can sleep)
4.30am James back to sleep
8.15am James awake
Now the fun of ROUTINE begins.
James has to see the coal train go past, he sits in the lounge Room at the window. Once the train has gone past he likes to sit for ten minutes with his iPad.
Daddy then tells James to go getting Mummy and Scar. He will run into my room and lay and cuddle me for a short time while I hear his iPad screaming different train noises. Once HE is ready we jump up and head to his room to collect his bottles and pop in the sink. He says HI to his dog Bear Bear and then Mummy attempts to get him calm so we can be out the door by 9.15am.
Quite often the time between waking and out the door is HECTIC. So many things could go wrong..... this morning James wanted to play 'hide & seek' for half hour.... so we all participated but that meant it was cutting time finely.
9.15am we are OUT THE DOOR. On our way to the coffee shop. I grab a coffee and james looks for spiders in the outside garden. After coffee we have to go see the big diggers down the road before our first therapy of the day.
TODAY we got to see 3 fire trucks and fire fighters doing training! James was PUMPED!
9.45am We arrive at OT. We always have to arrive 15 minutes early. This allows James to sit and calm. I read him books and he is ready for Lara to say 'hi james'.
10-11am Occupational Therapy. Sensory integration work for James' sensory needs.
11-12pm Give James a bottle and travel to speech therapy which is 30 minutes away from OT. Stop and get James a small gift for doing AWESOME OT. Almost had meltdowns today as NOT one shop in Shellharbour sold matchbox or hot wheels cars...... I will know for next week now!!!!
12.15-1pm Speech therapy. This week we are working on F... F F and more F! So bloody hard to get James to get this sound but we will get there. BOMBARD him until he has it!
1pm travel to the doctor. James has had a raspy throat now for a few weeks. No fevers or sickness or anything crazy but I would like to make sure there is no infection there. Particularly for Scarlett's sake as her autoimmune is triggered by infection.
2pm DR A..... so James had his throat swabbed today!!!! He did GREAT! Like pretty good considering he had to have a stick down his throat. GP doesn't wanna give James antibiotics for the sake of it BUT his sisters autoimmune is infection triggered and if anyone has strep it has to be dealt with. I will call Monday for the results.
So as soon as we finished at the GP I had to go get James a toy for his fantastic therapy. He choose a metal train today. We also grabbed some groceries and then we were home by 3pm.
It's now 3.35 pm and I have just sat to absorb some things that have gone down today.
Today even through the haze of manic busy busy that has been the day, I have still had to attend to more trivial things.
The rest of the afternoon will be calming our sensory soul down and hopefully into bed at a reasonable hour. We will attempt some dinner, he will have a nice 20 minute soak in Magnesium and a great home play with his toys. Mum will reset everything ready for tomorrow to do it all again with different activities and commitments.
Tonight I may just have a wine....
